Frequently Asked Questions
What is a healthy BMI?
A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy for most adults. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is considered obese.
What is my BMI if I weigh 200 lbs at 5'10"?
At 5'10" (70 inches) and 200 lbs, your BMI is (200 × 703) ÷ 70² = 140,600 ÷ 4,900 = 28.7 — which falls in the Overweight category.
Is BMI accurate for women vs men?
BMI uses the same formula for both sexes but doesn't account for body composition differences. Women naturally carry more body fat than men at the same BMI. It's a useful screening tool but not a complete health picture.
What BMI is considered obese?
A BMI of 30 or higher is classified as obese. This is divided into Class I (30–34.9), Class II (35–39.9), and Class III (40+), sometimes called morbidly obese.
How do I lower my BMI?
BMI decreases when you lose weight or increase height (which isn't possible as an adult). The most effective approach is a calorie deficit through diet combined with regular physical activity. Even a 5–10% reduction in body weight can meaningfully improve health markers.
What is my ideal weight for my height?
Your ideal weight range is the weight that puts your BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. This calculator shows your ideal weight range in the results after you calculate your BMI.
Can you have a normal BMI but still be unhealthy?
Yes. BMI doesn't measure muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution. Athletes with high muscle mass may show a high BMI despite being very healthy. Always consult a doctor for a full health assessment.
